Many of the photos from Michigan are copies purchased from the late Claude T. Stoner of Dexter, Michigan. C. T., as he preferred, traveled all over Michigan photographing trains and photocopying old photos. His informal Michigan Railroad Pictures sold copies for 15c to 25c each. As such, I have a large collection of photos of Michigan's short lines and logging railroads. A tool and die maker by trade, C. T. built his own photocopying camera and, traveling the state, begged and borrowed old photos to copy. Libraries and individual collections were his favorite targets. Long before his death, C. T. granted me permission to do as I pleased with his photos.
When C. T. passed away in 1977, his family had his collection appraised but no buyers could be found. Thus the collection was donated to the University of Michigan's then Transportation Library.
